When Your Boss Wears Metal Pants

As machines become more advanced, it is important for humans to learn to work effectively with thinking machines. One challenge is getting humans to trust algorithms and recognize that they often know more than we do.

Studies have found that people prefer human judgment to algorithms, even when the latter perform better.

However, incorporating human judgment into algorithms can help build trust. Additionally, making machines more humanoid can make them more relatable, but it can also lead to issues such as stereotyping and discrimination.

While We Sleep, Our Mind Goes on an Amazing Journey

Source:  National Geographic
Author:  Michael Finkel
Year: 2018

Sleep is vital to our mental and physical health. However, in our modern society, sleep is typically viewed as an obstacle to productivity. We have an innate wake-up call that is triggered by non-life-threatening situations, leading to difficulties in getting a good night's sleep.

Sleep is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system, body temperature, and blood pressure. A full night's sleep reinforces our memory, and lack of sleep can lead to a decrease in cognitive function.

During a good night's sleep, we cycle four or five times through several stages of sleep, each with distinct qualities and purpose.

Getting the Attention You Need

Source:  Harvard Business Review
Author:  Thomas H. Davenport and John C. Beck
Year: 2000

Business leaders can’t accomplish anything if their employees aren’t paying attention; to achieve long-term and short-term corporate goals, leaders need their people to focus in a sustained way on those goals. And lately, a lot of people’s attention is wandering. It’s easy to see why.

Bill Gates’s dream that we’d have all the information we want at our fingertips has come true with a vengeance. Intranets, software applications, and portals continually wash tsunamis of information onto our desktops. The average manager receives more than 100 voice mail and e-mail messages a day.

It would be bad enough if all this information were flung at a steady state audience, but in many organizations, staffs are leaner than ever. More information, fewer people—it’s no wonder that so many companies are on the verge of an acute attention deficit disorder.

How Volunteering in Project Management Can Boost Your Career

Source:  Article of the Week

Picture this: a junior project manager seeking ways to expand their horizons and deepen their impact. This was the scenario I found myself in around 10 years ago.

My career was thriving, but I sensed there was more to explore beyond the traditional work setting.

Little did I know that a single decision to volunteer as a project manager would set the stage for a profound shift.

Book Notes #86: Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell

Source:  Book Notes of the Week

This book offers a powerful examination of our interactions with strangers, and why they often go wrong.

Court transcripts are brought to life with re-enactments. You actually hear the contentious arrest of Sandra Bland by the side of the road in Texas. Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know.

And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world.
