Can Workplaces Have Too Much Psychological Safety?

Source: Harvard Business Review
Author: Peter Cappelli and Liat Eldor

Psychological safety is a concept focused on situations where risk-taking is encouraged, such as learning new procedures or brainstorming new ideas. However, studies have shown that more is not always better when it comes to psychological safety. In fact, performance in routine jobs can decline when psychological safety moves from average to high levels.

The problem is that excessive psychological safety can encourage people to take risks when they shouldn't, making it difficult for supervisors to hold employees accountable for poor performance. Collective accountability can help offset the negative effects of high psychological safety, but achieving high levels of collective accountability is just as challenging.
